TosaFest 5K

TosaFest 5K turn

MKE Runs is bringing back TosaFest 5K in 2018. After a one-year absence from the Milwaukee-area race calendar, we knew it deserved a rebirth and are developing a course that will continue the tradition of a hilltop start on Hillcrest Drive while ending at the new TosaFest grounds at Hart Park.

The race will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. TosaFest 5K has always been and remains one of your best chances to earn a 5K PR, with its overall downhill course, and the party at the finish line provides plenty of incentive to keep going.

Online registration is now closed. You may sign up for $35 at our packet pickup, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Performance Running Outfitters in Brookfield. Or on race day, registrants will pay $40. T-shirts are only guaranteed to online registrants, but some extras may be available after the race.

In addition to a great course and a rocking finish line at TosaFest, each participant will receive a race T-shirt and a TosaFest drink ticket. The 5K will be chip-timed by West Bend-based Absolute Race Timing, ensuring your results will be accurate. And if you succeed in earning a PR, come ring our PR bell.

We also have a special offer for our first 250 entrants. Each will receive a pair of handy, knit runner gloves. Perfect for the fall season.

This year's race will start near the top of the Hillcrest Drive hill just west of 68th Street and then will wind its way west to Menomonee River Parkway and back east on the Oak Leaf Trail before finishing at Hart Park for a net elevation drop of more than 100 feet -- even more than in past years. TosaFest this year will be set up at Hart Park this year, perfect for post-race fun. The course map below provides an overview, though the final route is subject to change.

TosaFest 5K route

Please be aware that THIS YEAR'S COURSE INCLUDES A RAILROAD CROSSING to enable us to finish at Hart Park. That means  THERE IS A CHANCE YOUR RACE WILL BE INTERRUPTED BY A TRAIN. Frequency of train traffic through Tosa Village is out of our control, so please be prepared to stop if and when the signals indicate a train is coming. We want all our runners to finish our race safely. And if your race is interrupted by a train, we will be handing out "slap wraps" to wear on your forearm, showing that you were among the "lucky" few. (They also double as drink wraps.)

Our top three men and top three women will each receive a $25 gift certificate from Performance Running Outfitters. We also will have age group medals for Under 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+. Awards will be presented on the stage near the west entrance to TosaFest around 6:30 p.m. You must be present to receive your award.

Early-bird packet pickup will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Performance Running Outfitters in Brookfield, and race-day packet pickup will be 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, outside the east entrance to Wauwatosa East High School.

Parking on race day will be available at East High School, or you are welcome to find a space to park where available at Hart Park or around Tosa Village. Be aware the starting line is a short walk uphill from the school, and the school is a short walk uphill from the finish line, in Hart Park.

It is up to you to make it to our starting line by 5:30 p.m., whether you walk, get a ride or pursue some magical third option. The start will be on 69th Street just north of Hillcrest Drive, which is close to but not the same as the starting line of previous TosaFest 5Ks.

The race ends in Hart Park on the sidewalk between the parking lot and the TosaFest grounds. Runners will be able to grab refreshments provided by our sponsor Metcalfe's Market before continuing along the sidewalk toward the west entrance of TosaFest, where you will have access to our post-race gathering area. Your TosaFest 5K T-shirt is your ticket to enter the music festival, through the west entrance only. For runners ages 21 and older, your race bib is your ticket to one free beer at the TosaFest beer tent near the west entrance. You must provide the race bib for it to be marked.

Of course, we put in a request for great weather! But if it rains, the race will continue as planned. The race will only be canceled in cases of extreme weather, such as lightning, that make it unsafe to proceed. There will be no refunds in the unlikely event that TosaFest 5K is canceled, so we can continue to support our charity partner, Wings of Glory.
